Beyond a Paycheck: Jobs Build Connections for Adults with IDD
Every October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month reminds us how fulfilling a career can be for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Through our Employment Services at RISE Services, Inc. Idaho, we’ve seen firsthand how pursuing a career means so much more than earning a paycheck. Having a job is a pathway to building meaningful relationships and strengthening a sense of belonging in the community.
Building Bridges Through Careers
Employment opens up many opportunities for individuals with IDD. Here are some ways that working in the community helps foster friendships and a sense of belonging:
- Shared experiences: Working alongside others allows individuals to bond over common tasks and workplace achievements.
- Teamwork: Collaborating with coworkers helps build trust and teaches valuable communication skills.
- Community involvement: Employment encourages participation in workplace and community events, expanding social networks.
- Routine interactions: Daily greetings and conversations can lead to genuine friendships and ongoing connections.
- Skill-building: Learning new roles together often means celebrating successes and supporting each other through challenges.
- Personal confidence: Success at work boosts self-esteem, making it easier to engage in social activities outside of the workplace.
Social interactions enrich lives and are also a reminder to individuals with IDD that they are valued members of their communities.
Support That Makes Integration Possible
At RISE Services, Inc. Idaho, our Employment Services team supports individuals as they set employment goals, find jobs in their communities, and navigate their careers. Participants discover new interests and learn new skills with guidance from caring team members.
Supported employment provides an opportunity for individuals to connect with others at their workplaces. This kind of support moves far beyond job training, helping people form lasting friendships and become active members of their communities.
