A DSP often supports individuals as they manage daily life routines, always focusing on promoting independence and choice. Some supported living responsibilities can look like:
- Helping individuals with daily routines like preparing meals, personal hygiene, or organizing activities
- Adapting support to meet each person’s needs and preferences
- Fostering independence by encouraging individuals to make choices and try new activities
2. Building Skills and Connections
A big part of a DSP’s role is to encourage growth, learning, and community involvement. This can mean:
- Supporting individuals as they attend opportunity centers or participate in community activities
- Encouraging participation in social, educational, or creative groups
- Assisting with learning new skills, whether it’s cooking, budgeting, or using public transportation
3. Creating a Safe and Respectful Environment
DSPs help ensure that everyone feels secure and valued. This includes:
- Promoting safety and well-being at home and out in the community
- Supporting respectful communication and problem-solving
- Supporting individuals as they build friendships, confidence, and engage in self-advocacy

- Collaborating with other DSPs, supervisors, and family members as part of a caring support system
- Respecting each individual’s preferences, strengths, and goals
